What it brought

Permission sets arrived in Winter '12, letting admins extend permissions to individual users on top of a profile, with up to 1,000 per org and support in packages and change sets. Database.com became generally available as a standalone multitenant cloud database for apps written in any language. The Force.com Developer Console shipped as GA, with a beta Java SDK alongside, and Jigsaw was renamed Data.com. Admins also got a new Setup experience and the Mobile Dashboards iPad app. Visual Workflow's cloud-based Flow Designer, which replaces the desktop tool, was in beta, and the Streaming API was a pilot.
