What it brought

Approval processes and validation rules both appeared in Winter '07. Administrators could build simple or multistep approval chains on standard and custom objects, with entry criteria and actions at each step, and write validation rules that block a bad save with a formula and an error message, enforced in Salesforce and through the Apex API. The Salesforce console put a list view, a detail view and a mini view on one AJAX screen. Developers got upgradeable managed packages with namespaces, custom buttons and s-control overrides, and outbound messaging to replace API polling. At 276 notes it is a big release, weighted toward the platform and customization. Call Center Edition and person accounts shipped as limited releases.
