What it brought
Salesforce moved external users from portals to Communities in Summer '13: new Customer Community and Partner Community licenses parallel the old High Volume Customer Portal and Gold Partner licenses, and each community gets an associated Force.com Site and Site.com site. The partner portal and the Customer Portal were both closed to organizations not already using them. Publisher actions let admins add and reorder custom actions in the Chatter publisher on the home page, the Chatter tab and record pages, and they replaced Chatter Tasks outright. The release is enormous, 279 notes. Knowledge One was in beta, and Connect for Lotus Notes was retired at the end of June 2013.
