What it brought

Salesforce shipped the sforce Enterprise Web Services API in Winter '04: SOAP/WSDL-based, strongly typed, with a WSDL regenerated whenever a field changed. With it came sforce Object Query Language and up to 50 sforce custom objects for data outside the standard records, the point where Salesforce became a platform as well as an application. Admins got the new Dashboards tab, a report charting engine, page layouts assigned per profile and record type, and a setup audit trail. The older XML-RPC and SOAP APIs stayed supported but were frozen, and all future work went to the new API.
